Barn Owl Sculpture, Stratford-on-Avon |
|
Before he retired, my father began collecting Lenox ceramic bird sculptures. By the time he died, his birds filled an etagere and perched on every window ledge, end table, mantlepiece, and shelf in my parents' home. Dad thought they were beautiful, and they were. I always had a hard time, though, squaring the man who loved these little bits of nature art with the somewhat distant father I grew up with. I was glad to know this side of him, even if it had to wait to manifest itself until I was an adult.
I took my daughter to England when Dad's collection had built to the point where we knew it wasn't a passing fad. We discovered a great shop in Stratford-On-Avon that carried some lovely sculptures of English birds. We picked up an English Robin for his birthday and ordered this Barn Owl for Christmas. Both, along with a whole bunch of others, now perch on my shelves and bookcases, where I enjoy them daily.
